Studio takes shape on Hoults Yard

Behind the scenes on film set

This shot is taken from behind the scenes on set with Ways to Live Forever.

It shows the flats of the set – a full downstairs interior of a modern house. More importantly, you can see the height of the Railhead studio space with the eaves of the roof and beams providing an easy method for rigging and lighting.

The shoot is well underway and we’ve had positive feedback for the way Hoults Yard works as a production base – WTLF has its production office, hair/make-up, costume, green room, prop store, tutor rooms and catering all within hards of each other and the set. The yard’s been busy with an extra 30 cars on site, too. All adding to the buzz.

This production coincided with the launch of Northern Film & Media’s new offices in our Kiln building. It provides modern offices with superfast broadband and all the other benefits we offer on the yard: 24 hour security and access, easy parking, on-site cafe, media cluster… Now you can also hope to snatch a glimpse of stars Ben Chaplin, Greta Scaachi, Emilia Fox, too!

Railhead event space

Just to mention that our super top secret project continues apace – exploring the feasibility of converting the yard’s Railhead building into an event space. We’ve run a couple of 100+ person events in there recently and have architects exploring the compliance needs of fire safety, noise containment and loos, so that we can open the space to interested promoters, events teams, degree shows, expo’s.

You can see from the photos below that the space can accommodate many more than 200 people (the approx number at the Codeworks event). The space is over 7000 square feet, double height with rafters. It would make a lovely space for a dinner for 300 or more with the connections to Newcastle’s past as a leader in the industrial revolution.

At Codeworks Think and a Drink, photographer Paul Santos took some fab images. I’ve added a few below to give you a feel for the industrial scale and feel of the place:

Hoults to host Codeworks’ Think and a Drink

Make a date for your diary: 2 July 09. We’re hosting an event in Hoults Yard with BBQ and booze to put us on the map.

The Yard has a host of amazing clients based in our village of office studios. They’ll all be represented, so an ideal time to see what all the buzz is about.

We are using our RailHead building – an old railway depot used when the yard was the world’s largest pottery in the 1850s. It’ll be a fabulous start to a range of events we’re looking to host: open air cinema, art exhibitions and conferences.

If you are looking for an unusual space for events, photo shoots and the like – give us a call on this. We’re currently hosting catalogue shoots, horror filming, music rehearsals, heritage tours…
