ITV to make major new drama in the North East

Monday 21st June, 2010

TV drama has continued its resurgence in the North East after confirmation that ITV Studios will make a series of feature length episodes of Vera this summer.

Dubbed ‘the new Frost’ by ITV Director of Television Peter Fincham and Director of Drama Laura Mackie, a £30,000 Northern Film & Media investment in the initial pilot helped secure an extended 3x 120 minutes run for the eagerly anticipated show.

Starring Brenda Blethyn OBE as an obsessive, workaholic detective called Vera Stanhope, each instalment will see her fight personal demons and tackle a new crime in modern-day Northumberland and Newcastle. The series is attracting other stellar artists, including BAFTA award winner Gina McKee.

The move is a significant boost to the North East TV drama industry, once the home of household titles such as Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Spender and Byker Grove.

Northern Film & Media has led a campaign to revive major production in the North East through a series of negotiations and investments. The move is starting to pay dividends as programme makers return to the region.

Hit BBC children’s drama Tracy Beaker was the first returnable TV brand to bring production to the North East post Wire in the Blood. Filming of the new series will return to the former La Sagesse convent school in Newcastle this summer.

Company Pictures’ Inspector George Gently starring Martin Shaw ended the BBC show’s long exile in Northern Ireland to return to the North East, where the screenplay was always set, after £150,000 investment from the agency earlier this year.

Kevin Whately and Robson Green were later reunited in the North East thanks to a £60,000 investment from Northern Film & Media in Mammoth Screen’s Joe Maddison’s War. The drama single will be shown on ITV this autumn.

A 4×120 minute series of Vera including the original pilot will be shown on ITV1 earlier next year.

ITV Director of Drama Commissioning Laura Mackie revealed the broadcaster’s vision for Vera;

“With the demise of A Touch of Frost we are keen to introduce new crime dramas into the mix and to create the iconic detectives of the future. Brenda’s portrayal of the sharp but shambolic Vera Stanhope is a wonderful addition to our slate.”

Northern Film & Media CEO Tom Harvey identified the regional significance of the move;

“TV and film production is annually worth about £7m to the North East. Major drama’s like Vera provide vital work for our crews and facilities and a significant boost to the wider economy. They also provide a fantastic opportunity for our locations and people to be seen across the UK and beyond.

The recovery of the North East TV sector is wonderful news for the region as senior BBC and ITV executives put their faith in our locations and talent.”

Disability documentary is landmark success for North East TV indie

Thursday 17th June, 2010

Newly launched Newcastle TV production company and NFM collaborator Northern Upstart is celebrating the imminent broadcast of their first major commission, entertainment documentary Are You Having a Laugh? TV and Disability for BBC Two.

A co-production between Northern Upstart and MarkThree Media, the show has secured a prime 9pm slot on the 25 June.

The programme is the creation of Grumpy Old Women writer and producer Judith Holder, leading factual entertainment producer/director Mark Murray and MarkThree Media’s Mark Allen and Kate Monaghan, herself a wheelchair user. Narrated by Little Britain comedian David Walliams, the show examines how television has portrayed disability over the past 50 years.

From Sandy in Crossroads to Brenda in The Office, Walliams highlights how the subject has been done well, how it’s been done badly, and how box ticking, political correctness and the odd token wheelchair has taken TV from Ironside to Little Britain in one generation.

With contributions from Eaglescliffe-based gold medal winning Paralympian Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, The Office writer Stephen Merchant, Armstong & Miller co-creator Ben Miller, BAFTA winning TV producer and wheelchair user Ash Atalla, Trigger Happy TV comedian Dom Joly and disabled The Office star Julie Fernandez, the programme looks back at the way society was used to seeing disability on screens and how that compares with what’s on there today.

“Securing this commission from the BBC is a strong start for Northern Upstart in the ever-competitive TV industry. With the support of Northern Film & Media, we believe that we have laid the foundations to develop a successful independent production company outside of the traditional M25 stronghold”, said Northern Upstart Executive Producer Judith Holder.

Northern Film & Media CEO Tom Harvey welcomed the BBC’s commitment to Are You Having a Laugh?, emphasising the opportunity for indies created by the corporation’s decentralisation activities: “With the the BBC moving five key departments from London to Salford and implementing a 50% outside-the-M25 commissioning target for 2016, we believe the future is bright for entrepreneurial creative enterprises across The North.”

Artists Laura Lancaster and Susie Green are hosting a ‘Meet the Neighbours’ night in their studio – Kiln 4. Aug 29

Put the Sunday of August Bank Holiday in light pencil in your diaries as we work out the logistics, licensing and line-up for a Habit all-dayer.

What’s new?

There’s an air of purposeful productivity about the yard at the moment. The Hoults team is running a series of relocations as we prepare for a renovation in the front Maling Studios block. So Real Life Options is moving to Kiln 9; City & Suburban is moving to a new office; Fly on the Wall is buzzing into Clocktower; Chapmans Furniture has switched to a new warehouse.

The rejig has uncovered some great spaces for quirky office and studio units, including our very own dungeon! Give Leanne a call on 0191 265 4282 if you’d like to view these and visualise yourself in a stone cellar or dusty attic!

The spring cleaning broom has also brushed things up for Jack Lowe who is now above his friday F&C chumsProjected Image (pop in for fresh flowers and great views) and onebestway is switching to Kiln 10/11 for a change of scene.

You may have seen Shawn flitting around the yard too – by way of introduction, he is a jack of all trades with a background in fishing, butchery, car spraying and chemistry. An ideal CV for dealing with art projects! One of the first projects he’s nailed is to create a gym for a fight club documentary producer Andy Smith (who doubles as a consultant at Mere Mortals) – Andy’s film Is it ‘cos I’m fat? will follow his progress from self-confessed tub to axe and sword champ. Watch out for French graffiti art or student art shows, a studio block or or…

Our Teapot Studios, trendy offices for two, have filled up fast with Mac support specialists Zen and building surveyors Harrow Consulting joining the corridor with craft software proucer FunkyHand and Point Pleasant PR. Watch out for phase two – shall we call it JamJar… spaces for 4 people…

Late Shows – 3 events at HYBY

Every year Tyne & Wear Museums runs Late Shows.

This year there are three events at Hoults Yard:

1. Globe Gallery at ThinkTank

2. Streetwise Opera at Clocktower Cafe

3. Northern Film & Media

It’s great to be part of the event – and a short hop from Mushroom Works also open alongside some Ouseburn excitements etc.

See ya.

HYBY’s influence reaches far beyond Byker

One of our big themes at Hoults Yard is how much national and international reach we have collectively in the work of our client businesses. It is important for each of us to be breakthrough players regionally. And, collectively it will also raise the stature of the yard and give further momentum to the growth of the OuseburnBykerNewcastleNorthEast media industry (and Gateshead too! ;-) .

HYBY reaches worldwide

Hedgehog Lab has just launched its first iPhone app.

Mere Mortals is winning awards for its game development – even a version of the French game ‘Boule’ or Petanque.

Jack Lowe continues to produce artwork for galleries in London – but also high-end retouching for clients as far away as New Zealand. He helps regularly at Baltic, including the Delhi collective on show at the moment.

The Tony Blair Sports Foundation is beginning to work on the ‘Decade of Sport’ around the Olympics. For instance, they have created a new training scheme to help start jogging groups at the workplace, aiming to 50,000 new people to running. Click here for info.

Mark Westaby has been recognised as one of the top advertising photographers in the world.

Northern Film & Media are pulling international creatives to work on film projects in the region – with a host of funding options coming onstream. Most recently, artist Gillian Wearing produced her film Self-Made in HYBY studios, offices and locations.

TV producer Northern Upstart is working on a number of commissions, off the back of success with series like Grumpy Old Women.

Likewise, TV producer Standing Stone, run by Tom Gutteridge, has exciting commissions in the pipeline. Watch this space, I’m told!

Artists, like Georgia Murray or Dan Holdsworth, have taken studios in the yard to prepare work for major exhibitions (Georgia is currently showing at the Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries show – Dan at Gergosian’s JG Ballard tribute Crash alongside the greats including Damian Hirst, Eduardo Paolozzi and Jeff Koons, no less)

Poetic Gem, fashion designers, have a big influence on the taste of the nation as they produce clothes for increasingly edgy supermarket clothes brands.

West Indian cricketers were here on a onebestway photo shoot to launch a Yorkshire cricket equipment supplier on the Asian market.

Photo shoot in The Kiln - high ceilings and natural light

…and many more…

ps. Thanks to Reid Ingram Weir for the HYBY/Hollywood snap. We’re making a competition out of getting the stickers into wierd and wonderful places. Send your pics over!

NorthernNet is a superfast FTP link that is available to anyone. It is located at Northern Film & Media’s offices in HYBY’s Kiln. It links a series of other nodes across the North of England, useful if you have massive files to transfer between Newcastle and Manchester, Middlesborough or elsewhere.

There’s an official launch for the whole of the North, which is being held at Hoults Yard. Details below.

Latest Hoults Yard news – Feb 2010

Folks –  a message direct from Charlie H…

Welcome to an update of activity at Hoults Yard. I hope it’s an opportunity to share some of the excitements across ‘our village’ – as well as communicate some of the logistical issues we are addressing at HQ.

You can also browse news and info on the blog http://houltsyard.wordpress.com/ and follow us on Twitter @houltsyard

Please do pile in with comment/feedback and mail me your own stories – so we can build the collective voice of this unique corner of Tyneside. There is certainly an energy about the place and a momentum which I hope can benefit us all, as well as send waves much wider abroad, or just to Gateshead.

1. Don’t be a stranger

The joy and the challenge of any village is interacting with neighbours – one day they commission you to collaborate on their big project, the next they are nabbing your parking space (or the last portion of Fish&Chips)!

We held our first ‘Meet the Neighbours’ night late last year – some 40 people attended. Our next is scheduled for 11th March starting at 430pm, Kiln Studio 25. Please come to network, please invite friends and useful contacts. Every week I meet new faces on the yard who have so much to offer you – but I can’t do the legwork all by myself.

2. AV Festival Finale

On March 13th, Tyneside’s latest arts festival will be holding its closing party. This event is hosting one of New York’s legendary DJs, Francois Kervorkian, on a very rare appearance for Tyneside. Wow! If you’d like a free guest list ticket, mail me and I’ll see if I can put your name down.

3. Warm welcome 1

I’m sure this weather has got you thinking how duff last summer weather was – and about foreign holidays. The yard plays host to one of Tyneside’s largest travel agents – Broadway Travel are now operating from The Boiler House. Broadway have expanded from Luton with their team of some 20 new faces on the screens/phones.

Grant Lawson, the Newcastle manager, assures me that he can do great deals for yard neighbours – either pop in or call on the priority number 0844 5441412

http://www.broadwaytravel.com/

4. Warm Welcome 2

Not alot of people know that we have a fashion design business on site. Poetic Gem are going from strength to strength, doubling the size of their office footprint in the back of The Kiln.

We also have The Tony Blair Sports Foundation newly installed in Maling Studios, so don’t be surprised if a former Prime Minister drops by, unannounced, at some stage!

And, shortly, we’ll be able to announce another new ‘signing’ – an Australian firm opening up in Europe in the online gaming business.

Nice to see so many firms in culture, media, digital and sport all choosing Hoults Yard for their base. We do have a few more spaces to fill in The Kiln, so we’d love you to recommend us (and pay handsome commission!)

www.thekiln.co.uk

5. Teapot Studios

We launched a set of six offices in our Parkside building just before Xmas (where Bruce Reid framer was before moving to ground floor). These are two-man suites, architect designed and have amazing views across to the Tyne Bridge. We’ve let three already – to Funky Hand, craft-making software firm; Point Pleasant PR, somewhat specialist in PR for the gambling trade; Barry Bell, copywriter.

The deal is £300 per month inclusive – do recommend to a friend. We’ll split the first month’s rent with anyone who helps us close a deal.

http://houltsyard.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/teapot-studios-launch-photos/

6. NFM – financing comes on stream

It’s all action in Kiln Studio3, with mobile seminars and new funding. There’s even a launch event for the funding on Thurs 4 Feb – mail me if you want a contact to get in pole position to bag some of their millions!

http://houltsyard.wordpress.com/2010/01/25/nfm-has-yet-more-grant-funds-for-ne-content-biz/

7. Entrepreneurs Forum – Will Dracup at Clocktower

The Entrepreneurs Forum is the regional team helping start-ups, as well as seniors. They are holding a series of dinners at the Clocktower Cafe – that hotbed of innovation. The next one features science success Will Dracup of Non-Linear Dynamics telling his story.

http://www.entrepreneursforum.net/events/viewarticle.php?id=629&offset=0

8. Gallery space – ThinkTank

As some of you know, there are some amazing hidden spaces at the yard. We’re working on one below Mere Mortals which would make a fab art gallery. We have a number of requests to use it, not least from on-site artists Alaric Hammond, Laura Lancaster and Dan Holdsowrth.

Watch this space for preview nights or exhibitions.

http://houltsyard.wordpress.com/2010/01/27/gallery-space-at-hoults-yard/

Logistics

a. Snow

I hope you’ll applaud the team’s efforts in coping with the New Year snow. Our strategy of shovels, JCB and salt put many a council to shame – please do applaud Sam for the master plan, as well as our maintenance crew Dougie, Lee and Ray. They are currently working on the gutters to ensure the drains and downpipes are running clear and can cope with future weather.

b. Cheeky NFM students

If you are following us on Twitter, you may have spotted the latest NFM mobile content course http://houltsyard.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/mobile-media-and-branded-entertainment-event-at-hyby/

Looks like you missed a treat – the experimental blog project will make you giggle, too… it’s on Moblog and launches a campaign about how confusing the yard’s signage is. Fair cop… you too have spotted that we have two buildings numbered 37! It’s all on the long long list of lists awaiting budget, time and snowmelt!

http://moblog.net/view/921212/back-entrance (Dig: look at the confusing ‘older/newer’ button to see the rogues gallery)

Phew… alot going on!

Full marks if you’ve read this far. Do mail us your news if you have something to share – and do sign up to ‘Meet the Neighbours 2’

All the best…
