Geordie triumph over Southern stereotyping?

Down at HoultsYard, we try to have nowt to do with Geordie Shore… we are all Radio4 and art projects, don’cha know…

For us, Newcastle is a place of more than one dimension. It’s a place routed in today’s global knowledge economy. It’s a place making the news for the right reasons… sustainability, electric cars, science, innovation, international students, health and happiness.

We did have a little gloat, though, as we watched Viz founder and HYBY pal Chris Donald teaching the girls to swear like Fat Slags on Geordie Finishing School

Jack Lowe works with ol’ HYBY pal Dan Holdsworth

It’s a creative cluster, innit!

Dan Holdsworth moved up to Newcastle 18 months ago. He was directed to Hoults Yard for studio space – and we duly hosted him, introduced him to the local arts scene and helped him build a bridgehead in the city.

His work speaks for itself: powerful photography, haunting images.

Dan has bagged himself a solo show at Baltic. Jack Lowe, a long-time HYBY favourite, has produced some limited edition prints of Dan’s work to sell alongside the expo.

Internet agency Creative Image expands at Hoults Yard

Design agency expands

A NEWCASTLE based design company business has moved to new premises and expects to turnover £250,000 in the next 12 months.

Despite the economic downturn, Creative Image Design has just taken on two new members of staff and moved to a larger office in the city’s Hoults Estate.

The move follows an increase in commissions from the online marketing and ecommerce sector, which has seen the company’s turnover increase from £50,000 in the first two years, to an estimated £250,000 in the next 12 months

Creative Image Design, which offers a variety of web design, graphic design and print services, was originally established by Ross Carr in August 2003 after the designer, who was helping run a family print and design company in Hexham at the time, spotted a gap in the Newcastle market.

He said: “The design industry has changed a lot since I first started out and Creative Image Design has adapted and grown continually as a result.

“We moved to Hoults Estate from our original site in Westgate Road because we were working on behalf of a number of companies based there, including film production company Standing Stone, but this larger office has ultimately enabled us to take on additional members of staff and better cater for our growing client base from around the UK.

“It also offers plenty of scope for us to grow further, which we firmly intend to do within the coming months.”

In the last few months the firm has completed work for a wide range of clients in numerous sectors, from property site HouseHunter to fundraising initiative thecharityteam and fashion boutiques CocoLove and Edo, who are now both able to offer online sales.

Creative Image Design now expects to secure further contracts in the coming months and expects to increase its workforce by the end of the year.

Hoults Yard street art project reaches Obama

David Cameron has helped the Hoults Yard Project, our street art programme, to hit the headlines. On his recent trip to the USA, he gave President Obama a painting by Ben Eine, who has committed to work for the project in Byker.

Will Ben now be took big for our Ouseburn initiative? I haven’t heard yet, but I very much hope he’ll still make it North!

HoHound still going… click it

Folks

One of our HYBY clients is HoHound, the local news website for Heaton and Ouseburn.

They’ve had some grief recently with their hosting going down, hackers attacking the site.

Do keep an eye on it.

I was thinking that we could do a joint Christmas party called HYHO for Hoults Yard Heaton and Ouseburn…

HYBY street art project set to go global

You heard it here first. But, shhh! This is an underground project run by those anonymous artists who operate in the city streets – changing the scene, commenting on issues and using walls to make their message.

One thing’s for sure – these guys act quickly. We like that at Hoults Yard because we do too.

It’s not fully defined, but already we have a clamour from international street art legends to come to Byker on a recce and to make their mark. Watch our walls.

And, watch this space:
