Cooking workshop – how to handle red hot chilli!

Another new event – a cooking class at HYBY’s Clock Tower. It’s presented by the website Love Your Larder, purveyors of unique special foods. And, it’s part of the Eat Festival’s Fringe Programme.

They say: Whether you’re a chilli expert or complete novice this evening with Hot Stuff Chilli Company will give you the opportunity to try everything from mild aromatic peppers through to the Ghost Chilli (the world’s hottest!) as well as learn the best ways to prepare and cook with them. Leave with a fab goodie bag!

Spring news at Hoults Yard

With the sun out, we’ve got a few Spring launches, interesting invites and new faces to welcome to the yard.

All part of the village chit-chat…

New mural

If you’ve not seen the Four Horses mural, have a stroll around the back of The Boilerhouse.

It took a weekend with our man Dougie in a cherrypicker, a Belgian artist called Roa and several bags of rolling tobacco (now on sale at ClockTowerCafe!).

The Belgian sprite wasn’t used to the Geordie weather, so wore two pairs of everything: trousers, coat, jacket, hat.

But, it’s already getting votes as the best HYBY mural yet.

Next up, the ClockTower northside has been whitewashed and a new artist is here today.

SheOne is a London-based artist. She is a he – and he paints abstract, swirly stuff.

J6 Films, who’s office window is dead centre of the new wall, is planning to make a time-lapse film of the paint job.

Hotel du Vin – Friday Fizz

Not strictly on the yard, our swanky hotel neighbours have invited me to a drinking event… networking, networking…

We are getting some decent cutprice rates at the mo – and regular room upgrates. Liaise if you want info.

For all of you children of the 1970s, you may remember the chant:

It’s Friday, it’s 5.30 and it’s Crack-a-jack…

Well, this week  it’s champagne and it ain’t HdV, it’s at the Malmaison, NE1 3DX.

I’ve taken the liberty to invite you along too – hope that’s OK, Kate… we’re all local! It’s all networking!

Unit 44

Have you seen a few folk wander around the yard in baseball caps?

When I was a lad, it was most cool if you curled up the brim.

These days, it seems the trendies keep that brim as flat as poss. With lots of facial hair, too!

Follow them to the space under the archway on our cobbled bank – there’s a treasure trove.

Last week, there was a scanty fashion shoot. This week, they are curating yet more murals.

There’s an old school analogue dark room. And an art gallery with affordable and collectable prints.

Welcomes

Hello to Screenreach International, which has taken an office in The Kiln. This firm arrived in the NorthEast when its founder was selected for TheDifferenceEngine’s first programme. (See above second programme finale). No looking back as they picked up investment from Sage founders, hired execs from TwentyFirstCenturyMedia and have already started an assault on the US market.

Nice to see expansion from ReadySalted, too.

A graduate from our Nomad hot desking facility, their web design business is going to a new level as folk join the team.

ClockTower Cafe

With the whole Bank Holiday mayhem over Easter and Willz’ Wedding, we think we’re not alone in taking a couple of days off but getting three clear weeks holiday. I am sure you’ll agree that Tracy, Charlotte and Sam deserve a break. See signs in the cafe.

They’ll be announcing their Friday BBQ programme soon, though. Jolly good.

Let’s hope the sun keeps shining… see you at one or other of the above…

Clock Tower Cafe in full swing

Just so you know… Tracy Fake and Charlotte Windebank are running the cafe as part of the Hoults team. Come in and say ‘hi’!

We’ve taken over and made some changes since 2010. Firstly, we’ve axed the prices so that we believe it’s all good value.

We’ve put the prices down so you can get a posh Capuccino for £1.40 and a full English all-day breakfast for £2.95… or a meal deal with 3 items for £1.80. The place has got its alcohol licence too… so you can have a glass of wine or a beer with your Fish n Chips on Friday.

Bacon sarnies, Capuccino, hot soup, panini, daily special...
