Art film at Hoults Yard by Turner winner Gillian Wearing – Ncl screening

This just in – I think any yardista complies, given the disruption in 2009/10 from film shoots…

This September the Tyneside Cinema and Northern Film & Media present Self Made, the incredible directorial debut from British conceptual artist Gillian Wearing. Click here to see a clip from its trailer – it was an accepted film at Austin Texas’ SXSW fest!

Click for a TimeOut movie review – quite intense – here.

Self Made will be screening at the Tyneside Cinema from Friday 2 September – Thursday 8 September and there will also be a special screening on Sunday 4 September at 3.00pm featuring a Q&A with Gillian Wearing and Sam Rumbelow.

As someone who worked on the film, we would like to offer you 2 tickets for the price of 1 for a screening of Self Made at the Tyneside Cinema.

Claudia Rankin – ceramics, textile, collage

Bower Bird – an exhibition of new ceramics, textiles and collages by Claudia Rankin

A weekend pop up show

Thursday – Sunday 9th-12th June 2011
10am till 5pm
Hoults Yard, Walker Road, Newcastle NE6 2HL

Pop up show
The challenge is to transform a pristine office space at Hoults Yard into a visual feast. To give some ‘home like’ context for the artworks, they will be shown on & around furniture from Chic Antique, Newcastle.

The show will include an entire  wall of hand decorated plates cast from moulds made from a collection of ceramics found on travels around the world. Also on show will be screen printed textiles some of which are incorporated into collages using reclaimed frames.

Background
The exhibition title ‘Bower Bird’ refers to a radio programme that inspired Claudia whilst working in her studio. It went into detail about birds that decorate their nests with materials they carefully select from their environment with the most highly embellished Bower attracting a higher potential of mates.

Claudia goes onto explain:

“I feel some affinity with these birds as my studio is crammed full of materials & objects that I cannot resist accumulating. From feather trimming & old printing blocks found in flea markets abroad to vintage fabric & bashed up gilt picture frames from local auctions, I’m an avid collector of anything that catches my eye.  I use these materials to make my collages, a blend of old brought to  life with new forms and ideas…”

Hoults Yard and the Ouseburn
Claudia has been coming to Hoults Yard for years. There is a great creative energy about the place, both contemporary & historical -  “I love the fact that the part of the building I’ll be exhibiting in once housed Malings Pottery that until the 1960s was a fully functional ceramics factory.” Charlie Hoult, Managing Director of Hoults Yard is in full support of the show and says: ‘It’s exciting to see how versatile our spaces are at the yard – and how
creative individual artists are to adapt their work to the place’

Biography
Claudia originally came to the North East from London to do her MA in Sculpture at Newcastle University.  Her work has been shown widely at  New York, Amsterdam and London Art Fairs and she is currently represented by Wilson Stephens Fine Art in London. This will be her first significant solo exhibition in the North East since a sell-out show in 2006.  Her work has been commissioned by public and private organisations  including English Heritage and most recently by Unilever for items of jewellery. Although her home & studio are in Corbridge she’s been the work for ‘Bower Bird’ in the Ouseburn area of Newcastle. The screen prints have been made at Northern Print  & the ceramics at Ouseburn Pottery, two fantastic resources for local artists.

Oz street artist Stormie Mills, plus Remi/Rough, at HYBY

In the next 10 days, we’re anticipating the arrival of another mural, courtesy of Australian artist Stormie Mills and his UK collaborator Remi/Rough. Another excitement alongside Insa. Below for some links to coverage of Hoults Yard in the blogosphere…

Unit44 Presents…

Over the last week we have had the pleasure of hosting internationally known ‘serial doodler’ Jon Burgerman as he goes bigger than ever transforming a ‘white wall’ within Hoults Yard.

Jon armed with an idea brought with him the larger than life lovable characters that have won him devoted followers all over the world:

From left to right; Grumps, Mustard, Anton and Pickle Pig

“What couldn’t have been anticipated was the extreme cold on Saturday night followed by torrential rain. To our despair when we arrived to finish the piece on the Sunday it was damaged by the water – the week consisted of completing the characters and restoring the damage.”

To read Breaks of 10 Blog in full and an Interview with Bugerman click here.

Jon’s piece now joins Kid Acne’s ‘DUST IN THE GIANTS EYE’ mural in what is set to become the largest outdoor gallery in the country. Danny and Steven at the Unit44 gallery have programmed various artists coming far and wide as part of the Hoults Yard White Walls Project. Other names Confirmed to take on the mammoth task are the likes of EELUS, EINE, REMI/ROUGH, PREFAB77, BURNING CANDY and MAC1.

Watch our space!

Disappear Here

A bunch of ambitious Northumbria students is putting on a pop-up group show in our ThinkTank Gallery space this week. Impressive stuff.

And what a great title for the event: Disappear Here.

Joe Steele – artist to watch – Blast, Feb 12

I get some great emails and some interesting offers for tenants. Last year, the most interesting request came from a glassblower who was looking for a workshop. He has made a business for 15 years blowing glass vases… for dolls houses.

Today some self publicity for Joe Steele’s latest show:

Hi Charlie

I left you a message on your answer phone, but had a lot to explain on it!

Firstly it’s unfortunate I wasn’t able to do BLAST at Hoults yard, as it turns out I’m not allowed to shoot anyone at World headquarters, but the show is still going ahead.

I’d like to personally invite you to BLAST at World Headquarters on the 12th Feb 9pm till late. It’s an exhibition by myself and fellow artists Tom Whitty and Claudio Pascale.

I’ve been painting using explosives, Tom has been making political paintings and Claudio has been making some prints. There will also be a coffin there too.

Regards

Joe Steele
